The Top-Five OG strains of Cannabis

Now, while none of you will be raising an eyebrow when you see the letters OG, as they are virtually synonymous with cannabis, how many of you actually know what the letters actually stand for?

Hmmm…

How many of you are now scratching your head, and no, not because you’ve got lice or an itchy scalp?

Well, guess what, we can’t give you a definitive answer, as there isn’t one.

Bearing in mind the narcotic effects of cannabis, it should come as no surprise that the derivation of OG is also rather hazy.

We have a few options, and underneath this video you can cast your vote as to which definition you believe is the correct one.

In the early days, one California grower was sharing some weed with someone he had recently met, and he was asked if it was grown in the mountains.

“No” came the reply, “Its’ ocean grown, I grew it by the ocean”. The strains he used were then prefixed with OG, for Ocean Grown.

Then there was the age of the ‘Original Gangsta’ when the Cypress Hill Crew tagged OG on to the back of Hindu Kush.

Finally, there is the tale of a Humboldt County grower and an early cultivator in the area popularized in the Netflix series Murder Mountain.

Apparently, he flew to Afghanistan to smuggle back seeds with prime kush genetics.
The resulting harvests, with terpene-rich buds nourished by the Emerald Triangle’s unique terroir, were dubbed OG Kush to indicate they had been cultivated by the strain’s original growers.

So, what are our top-five OG strains?

In fifth place is SVF OG, or San Fernando Valley OG – renowned for its great pain relief properties and ability to leave you feeling relaxed, happy and a tad euphoric, without leaving you comatose on the living room couch.

At number four we have Holy Grail OG Kush – the granddaddy of high-thc-laden strains with levels approaching 29%, yet still with 4% CBD. The plant is easy to grow with large dense buds appearing at 9-10 weeks.

Jon Snow comes in at number three, though this strain has nothing to do with the Channel 4 newscaster or a character in Game of Thrones.

It is one of the most potent Indica hybrids out there, and is often chosen to treat those suffering from conditions such as insomnia, chronic fatigue, ADD or ADHD, nausea or appetite loss, and depression.

In at two, we have Banana OG.

What can we say about a strain that is reported to leave those who over-imbibe in a near comatose state before intense hunger and sleepiness set in. With a smell and flavour of overripe bananas, this hybrid definitely earns it name!

Finally, at number one, we have OG Kush, whose popularity comes from a combination of being incredibly easy to grow, and a great strain to crossbreed. What more its THC content has consistently been measured between 20 and 25%!

So, there you have it – but if you have your own opinions, don’t be afraid to let us know in the comments section below.
