EarthBox Fertilizer Setup

Description

EarthBox instructions recommended a fertilizer trench and dolomite lime, but in this clip, I explained why I took a different approach for living soil.

I broke down how traditional setups used peat and perlite (which lack calcium), and why adding the right calcium sources mattered for long-term soil health.

What’s happening here:
EarthBox method suggested trenching fertilizer for root access
Dolomite lime was recommended to supply calcium in basic mixes
Peat-based soils lacked calcium and needed supplementation
Living soil aimed to be reused long-term, not replaced

My approach:
Avoided dolomite lime due to excess magnesium buildup
High magnesium could tighten soil and affect structure over time
Used a balanced amendment blend instead of single-input lime
Relied on gypsum, oyster shell, and natural inputs for calcium
Included inputs like fish bone meal and crustacean meal for minerals

Why it matters:
Better mineral balance supported long-term soil health
Avoided buildup issues when reusing soil cycle after cycle
Created a more sustainable, no-till living soil system

Not all “recommended” methods fit living soil, adjusting inputs made a big difference over time.
