I’m continuing my Fundamental FAQ series for 2026, designed to help growers build a strong foundation and make informed decisions with confidence.

In this episode, I tackle one of the most common, and most misunderstood, questions in living organic soil: are you feeding the plant, or are you feeding the soil?

This video breaks down the philosophical and practical differences between hydroponic precision feeding and soil-based biological systems. I explain what people really mean when they say “feed the soil,” how nutrient cycling actually works, and why living soil relies on microbial life, mineral balance, and plant-driven biology rather than constant direct input.

We explore the differences between force-feeding nutrients versus building a buffered ecosystem, the role of mulch layers, cover crops, and compost, and how systems like rhizophagy and endocytosis suggest plants may be interacting with microbes in ways we are still learning about. I also address the “half-in organic” trap, when growers bring hydro-style control, over-testing, and pH obsession into a system designed to function more holistically.

Toward the end, I explain what feeding the soil actually looks like in practice: mineral balancing, quality compost and castings, proper aeration, moisture management, top dressing, and observing trends instead of chasing numbers. The goal is not to abandon tools or science, it’s to understand when to trust the system and act as a steward rather than a controller.
