Episode 9: Week 9 Grow Update, Root-Bound Recovery & Keeping Plants Healthy While Away

In this episode of the BuildASoil 2×4 Series, Season 3 Episode 9, I share a quick Week 9 update before heading out of town and explain how I keep root-bound plants healthy without rushing the next stage of the grow.

I begin by checking in on the plants after topping and discussing why I’m intentionally delaying the transplant into the EarthBoxes and 15-gallon containers. Rather than rushing the process, I explain why I want to take the time to properly set up the living soil, install the Blumat irrigation system, and teach each step before moving the plants into their final homes.

Next, I evaluate each plant’s health after recent feedings with Rootwise, Build-A-Veg, Build-A-Bloom, and Organics Alive. Even though the plants are becoming root-bound, I explain how these biological inputs are helping maintain healthy growth, improve color, and encourage recovery while they remain in their small containers.

From there, I demonstrate a simple moisture management trick that helps buy extra time while I’m away. Instead of bottom watering, I surround each container with BuildASoil Light Mix inside a tray, allowing the roots to grow into the surrounding soil and access additional moisture without sitting directly in water. I explain why this method better supports both plant health and soil biology while reducing the risk of overwatering.

Finally, I discuss how this simple setup keeps the plants healthy until I return, allowing me to focus on a proper transplant and irrigation setup rather than rushing important steps before leaving.
