Episode 8: Week 8 Grow Update, Final Seed Sexing, Plant Reshaping & Pre-Flower Preparation

In this episode of the BuildASoil 2×4 Series, Season 3, I continued the Week 8 update and focused on final seed sexing, plant health decisions, and getting everything ready for the transition into the 2×4 flower run.

We started by going through the one-gallon plants grown from Cocoon genetics by Bodhi. At this stage, they had fully outgrown their containers and were clearly responding to both root restriction and consistent feeding. I broke down how the earlier top dress, including compost-based inputs and Kashi Gold activity, helped keep the plants vigorous even in tight spaces and supported strong branching structure right up to sexing time.

The episode then moved into final seed sexing and plant identification. I went plant by plant, checking preflowers closely and explaining what I was seeing in real time, what clearly indicated male versus female traits, what was still too early to call, and why experience and patience matter more than rushing decisions at this stage. I also talked through how rootbound stress can influence early flowering signals and why that can actually help us dial timing in smaller container runs.

From there, we shifted into transplant planning and plant preparation. I explained how being rootbound changes everything at this stage; moisture uptake, nutrient demand, and overall plant stability; and why we needed to decide quickly which plants would move forward into the flower run.

Finally, I performed heavy defoliation and structural reshaping. I removed significant biomass, prepared cuttings for potential clones, and restructured the plants to favor a shorter, bushier canopy suited for the 2×4 tent. I also explained my reasoning behind aggressive pruning, how I decide what stays and what goes, and how this sets the plants up for a faster recovery after transplant.

This episode really focused on decision-making: identifying sex, selecting keepers, and reshaping plants so they can transition cleanly into flower with strong structure and renewed vigor.
