Episode 12: Flip to Flower, Trellis Training & Pre-Flower Defoliation

In this episode, Season 3 of the 2×4 Grow Tent series continues with the Week 12 update as the garden officially transitions from vegetative growth into flower. I walk through my complete flower flip process, including canopy management, trellis training, defoliation, and final lighting adjustments before stretch begins.

I begin with a Week 12 update, explaining why it’s time to flip the plants into flower and how I decide when the canopy is full enough for the transition. I discuss plant size, expected stretch, nutrient timing, top dressing considerations, and why proper canopy management becomes the priority before changing the light cycle.

Next, I evaluate both the BluMat and EarthBox systems, checking soil moisture, reservoir conditions, feeder root development, and overall plant health. I compare how each growing system is performing while demonstrating how I continue training branches through the trellis to maximize canopy coverage and prepare every top for flowering.

From there, I perform a complete pre-flower cleanup by removing lower growth, lollipopping branches, and selectively defoliating large fan leaves. I explain how opening the canopy improves airflow, increases light penetration, and redirects the plant’s energy toward productive flower sites above the trellis while eliminating growth that would never reach the canopy.

Finally, I officially flip the tents to flower and perform a PPFD check to dial in light intensity for the start of bloom. I adjust the lighting schedule, explain how I set PPFD targets during early flower, compare strip lights versus quantum boards, and share my approach to gradually increasing light intensity as the stretch begins.
